Organ Harvesting: Ekweremadu Jailed 10 years, Wife Beatrice gets 4 Years

The Old Bailey Court in London, United Kingdom court Friday sentenced former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu, to nine years and eight months in jail for an organ trafficking plot.

Similarly, the court also sentenced his wife, Beatrice, to four years six months while the medical doctor who acted as a ‘middleman’ in the plot, Dr Obinna Obeta, was given a 10-year jail term with his medical licence suspended.

SunriseNigeria recalls that in March 2023 that the jury found them guilty of criminally conspiring to bring a 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney.

The young man was said to have been falsely presented as Sonia’s cousin in a failed bid to persuade doctors to carry out an £80,000 private procedure at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

The young man was said to have been offered an illegal reward to become a donor for Sonia after kidney disease forced her to drop out of a master’s degree in film at Newcastle University.

Their conviction was the first verdict of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act.

Former Kogi Governor, Ibrahim Idris Loses Son, Hon Mohammed

Reports reaching SunriseNigeria indicate that former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Mohammed Ibrahim Idris has died.

Mohammed, son of a former governor of Kogi State,  Alhaji Ibrahim Idris reportedly slumped and died on Wednesday while preparing to go for the Eid-el-Fitr prayers.

BREAKING: FG Approves Thursday As Additional Public Holiday For Eid-el-Fitr

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, April 11, 2024, as additional public holiday to commemorate Eid-El-Fitr.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Aishetu Ndayako, shared on the ministry’s X account on Tuesday.

The statement said, “The Federal Government has approved Thursday, April 11, 2024 as an additional public holiday to celebrate this year’s Eid -El-Fitr.

“The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, while congratulating the Muslim Ummah for a successful completion of a month of spiritual rejuvenation, reiterates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s firm commitment to providing a safe and prosperous Nigeria for all to thrive.”
