Igala Kingdom Not Part of Biafra – ICDA

Published

on

The Igala Cultural Development Association (ICDA) has distanced the Igala race from the secessionist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Chairman of the ICDA National Working Committee, Comrade Enemona Emmanuel Omattah who expressed the position in an interview with journalists in Lokoja, demanded that the group should immediately re-draft their map.

Omattah told the newsmen it was an error to include Igala nation in the Biafran map as they did not believe in succession but inclusion.

The former State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) stated that the age-long trade relations and intermarriage between Igbos and Igalas is not enough reason to deny his people their true ethnic identity.

“We are not part of their agitation. IPOB and Biafra cannot annex Igala nation.

“We are calling on Igbo people to stop including Igala land in their map.

“During the Nigerian Civil War, Emeka Ojukwu-led team bombed Igala land. Our land was actually attacked. The people that attacked us years ago cannot come around now and claim we are part of them.

“We are not part of Biafra. We will never be part of Biafra. Though we do business with them and even intermarry, that does not mean we are part of them.

“We believe in the Nigeria Project. We believe in the leadership of Nigeria nation. We have our issues with the Nigeria nation but we are not antagonistic.

“We will address our issues at the appropriate time, not by carrying guns and fighting. We believe in the corporate existence of Nigeria. This is the position of Igala nation,” he said.

Also  reacting to the inclusion of Igala nation in their agitation, an Igala community leader Dr James Odaudu advised the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to go back and study the history of the Igala people to be better informed.
“How can they include the Igala Kingdom in their agitation? What is the basis?” he queried
“Igala, as a people and a Kingdom,  are a very distinct, independent and autonomous entity,  who, before colonial territorial manipulations and distortions,  controlled vast areas of the present South East,  Middle Belt and North East of Nigeria”.
“It is incontestable that the Igala people have been short-changed in the current dispensation, but succession has never been part of our agenda,  not to talk about being part of the Biafran agitation. They may have their reasons for it, but we are not part of it”.
He appealed to the Federal Government to address the perceived neglect of Igala nation in its development agenda and appointments.

* Asks Nigerians to Always Seek Lawful Means in Seeking Redress

By Ojone Grace Odaudu

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has felicitated with Governors Simi Fubara of Rivers State and Agbu Kefas of Taraba State respectively on the affirmation of their electoral victories by the Supreme Court.

In a post on his ‘X’ handle, the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections described the victory as not only for the governors, but also the Peoples Democratic Party, the Nigerian electorate and all lovers of democracy and justice.

He enjoined all Nigerians to be vigilant and to always rely on lawful means in seeking redress as he has always done.

The post:

“I celebrate with governors @SimFubaraKSC of Rivers State and @GovAgbuKefas of Taraba State, whose victory at last year’s gubernatorial election polls were unanimously affirmed today by the Supreme Court. No doubt this is not just personal victory but victory for the PDP family, the Nigerian electorate, and all lovers of Democracy and Justice.

Indeed, their victory has reinforced the hope of the survival of our democracy, which citizens are getting disillusioned and disenchanted with the APC’s win-at-all-cost policy and brazen disregard for the rule of law.

I enjoin all Nigerians to be vigilant and to always rely on lawful means in seeking redress as I have always done, and by the grace of God, we shall triumph.

Accept my congratulations, Your Excellencies. -AA”

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the elections of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, effectively killing the appeals filed by the governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party in the state.

Similarly, the apex court also upheld the election of Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, ruling against the appeal by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress,

In a twist of fates, the court upturned the verdict of the court of appeal which nullified the election of Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, saying that the appellate court’s decision to uphold the tribunal’s earlier decision was wrong.
