The Minister for Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, at the World Cancer Symposium on Monday in Abuja delivered a keynote address calling for concerted efforts to defeat the scourge of cancer.

Hosted by Project Pink Blue, the symposium focused on the theme “Economy, Tax, and Cancer Control: The Exit of Pharmaceutical Companies from Nigeria,” aiming to raise cancer awareness and advocate for patient navigation, particularly for those in poverty.

Bagudu underscored the government’s commitment to healthcare, made evident by the increased budget allocations, particularly for essential equipment. While acknowledging the concerns expressed about pharmaceutical companies leaving Nigeria, he highlighted ongoing efforts to bolster the economy and attract investment.

He also highlighted recent engagements with the European Union, where fruitful discussions on financing and support for healthcare initiatives took place. He reiterated the government’s determination to implement policies fostering private sector participation and ensuring equitable access to capital, especially to support the pharmaceutical industry.

Acknowledging the urgency of addressing regulatory changes and competitive pressures affecting the pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors, Bagudu emphasised ongoing efforts to support struggling companies and drive the Value Chain Development Programme in the pharmaceutical sector by the Trade and Industry Ministry.

The Minister also emphasized on the opportunities the departure of companies presents for innovation and entrepreneurship in addressing healthcare challenges.

The symposium featured insightful panel discussions on tax administration and the impact of pharmaceutical companies’ withdrawals. Additionally, the launch of the NOI poll on cancer reports provided valuable insights into public perceptions and challenges.

In conclusion, the Minister commended all stakeholders for their commitment to advancing cancer control efforts in Nigeria, urging collaboration and seizing the moment as an opportunity for growth.
